Mirian "Bev" Perez CEO & Founder of SHIELDUS Co., had a vision- to break the stigma of mental health and end the suicide epidemic amongst first responders. After 10 years of serving as a police officer Bev was involved in tragic shooting that would end her career. On March 13, 2006 Bev's life changed forever when he boyfriend who was working undercover was shot by another officer, subsequently dying in her arms. Bev lost her, career, her beloved and almost lost her life after a suicide attempt in September of 2016. After a long journey of healing Bev noticed there was a lack of services for First Responders and Mental Health. She immediately began thinking of ways to share her journey of healing and all the modalities that saved her life with her peers. Knowing that many may be suffering in silence Bev decided to start this nonprofit to create a safe space for First Responders to heal and deal with the everyday struggles on working on the the job. Bev shares her story of tragedy to triumph and continues to motivate, inspire and and serve as the vessel to be the voice for the voiceless in an attempt to break the stigma and end the suicide epidemic amongst first responders. Her vision is to end the suicide epidemic one wellness retreat at a time. Each retreat will offer tangible and evidence-based holistic practices for First Responders to heal, deal and cope with life in a healthy way.
